Minka Kelly knows her worth.
Shortly after Josh Duhamel was cast in Netflix’s new western romance series Ransom Canyon, the Friday Night Lights actress was invited to a chemistry read and subsequently offered a role to star alongside the Transformers star. But before she could officially accept, the 44-year-old had to negotiate for pay parity with her male counterpart.
Following lengthy negotiations, per Deadline, Minka didn’t end up fully matching Josh’s salary. But she did express how receptive the network was in minimizing the pay gap.
“I think that’s probably one of the best things about working with Netflix,” Minka told Deadline in an interview published April 18, “is that they’re very pro that. So I didn’t have to fight very hard.”
“They sort of made that easy,” she continued. “I feel really lucky to get to work with the company that does care about that.”
E! News has reached out to Netflix for comment but has not heard back.
The series—which is based on a series of books by Jodi Thomas—follows three competing ranching families in a small Texas Hill Country town. Josh plays rancher Staten Kirkland while Minka plays dancehall owner Quinn O’Grady, who also happens to be Staten’s longtime family friend. And, of course, the tiny town is crawling with love triangles, conflicts, feuds and, most importantly, secrets.
While many have compared the Montana-based drama to Yellowstone, which followed the owners of the largest cattle ranch in the same state, the Roommate actress emphasized that Ransom Canyon is unique in its own right.
“I guess they’re both in the same sandbox,” Minka told E! News in a joint interview earlier this month, “but I think Ransom is a totally different thing. It’s its own entirely different world.”
“It’s family, it’s romance, beautiful landscapes, it’s cowboys, it’s horses,” she explained. “It’s love, loss and betrayal. You’re watching these characters find purpose and come into their own power.”

But while Ransom Canyon transports audiences to a small Montana town rather than a Texas high school, Minka admitted that a hint of Friday Night Lights energy may have made its way into her character.
As she put it, “This is like Lyla Garrity 20 years later.”
Meanwhile, Josh, 52, emphasized the relatability of the show through the small-town drama that lives within the confines of the town’s borders.
“The history, especially between these two families,” Josh said of his and Minka’s characters. “There’s so much tension between them, so many squabbles.”
“These things keep coming up,” he continued. “No matter how much you try to mend those fences, there’s so much history there that it’s hard to fix the past. No matter how hard you try, something seems to come up.”
