Hunter Metcalf choked back his tears as he explained the heartbreaking moment he desperately tried to stop the blood from gushing from the heart of his twin brother Austin, who was stabbed to death at a high school track meet.
On April 2, about 10 a.m., Hunter was with his twin brother Austin, a star athlete who was competing in discus throw and shot-put events at a track meet, held at the David Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
âWe did everything together. You name anything in the world, itâs always us two. We were always basically one person,â Hunter said of him and Austin, the football MVP for the team the two played.
Hunter, born four minutes after Austin, explained that him and his twin â both juniors at Memorial High School outside Dallas â were in the schoolâs tent when a student from another school decided to enter.
âThis kid was sitting under out tent at track, we asked him to move. He started getting aggressive and talking reckless and my brother stepped in and said, âyou need to move,ââ Hunter told ABC affiliate WFAA in a heartbreaking interview. âAnd heâs like, âMake me move.â
âI tried to help himâ
According to a witness, the other student â identified as Anthony Karmel from Centennial High School â told Austin, âtouch me and see what happens.â Then he allegedly reached into his backpack and pulled out a black knife and stabbed the twin once in the chest before running away.
âI tried to whip around as fast as I could. I didnât see the stabâŚbut then I looked at my brother⌠and Iâm not going to talk about the rest. I tried to help him,â a teary-eyed Hunter said, adding that tried to save his brotherâs life by stopping the blood.
âI tried to help him.â

He held his twin until first responders arrived and attempted resuscitation.
âThey yanked me off him,â Hunter said, who added he wasnât allowed to ride in the ambulance with his brother.
The twinâs dad, Jeff Metcalf, took Hunter to the hospital.
âDied in brothers armsâ
âThey were twins, identical twins, and his brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding, and he died in his brotherâs arms,â Metcalf told NBC of his son, who he described on a GoFundMe campaign as âa bright young manâ whose âsmile would light up the room.â
Metcalf continued, âI rushed up there and I saw him on the gurney, and I could tell â they said he wasnât breathing. I could see all the blood, and I saw where the wound was, and I was very concerned, so I had to find his brother, and we rushed to the hospitalâŚâ
Despite lifesaving measures by emergency personnel, Austin died of his injuries.
