NPR and three other public radio stations argue in a federal lawsuit filed in Washington, D.C., that President Trump’s May 1 executive order violates the First Amendment’s protections for free speech and the press, and infringes on Congress’s authority.
According to the legal complaint, the order “also threatens the existence of a public radio system that millions of Americans across the country rely on for vital news and information.”
The lawsuit further states that the order “expressly aims to punish and control Plaintiffs’ news coverage and other speech the Administration deems ‘biased.’” The attorneys for the news outlets concluded, “It cannot stand.”
