Musk goes off on Trump over extravagant federal spending bill

Elon Musk Blasts Trump’s ā€˜Big Beautiful Bill’ in Fiery Exit

Just days after stepping down from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk launched a full-throated attack on Donald Trump’s newest fiscal package.

From Ally to Adversary

Once seen as Trump’s go-to man for bureaucratic reform, Musk wasted no time turning on the administration’s ā€œOne Big Beautiful Bill.ā€ On social media, he called it a ā€œdisgusting abominationā€ that betrayed the principles of smart spending and reform.

The bill passed the House by a single vote on May 22. Pitched as a populist win for working-class Americans, it offers tax breaks through 2028—such as eliminating taxes on tips and pausing overtime penalties. It also reallocates billions toward military and border security.

Musk, however, isn’t buying the hype.

Musk Slams Bill’s Scope

Speaking to CBS Sunday Morning, Musk said he was ā€œdisappointedā€ by the bill’s size and impact.
ā€œIt increases the deficit and undermines everything DOGE stood for,ā€ he warned.
Then came the zinger:
ā€œA bill can be big or beautiful. But not both.ā€

Deep Cuts and Controversy

The bill slashes Medicaid and SNAP benefits to offset lost tax revenue. It also restricts healthcare access for undocumented immigrants and scales back support for gender transition services.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates 8.6 million people could lose healthcare coverage.

Trump, however, sees it differently.
ā€œThis is the largest mandatory spending cut EVER,ā€ he posted on Truth Social. ā€œWe’re ending tax on tips, overtime, and Social Security for seniors. And SNAP? It’s for Americans ONLY!ā€

Tesla in the Crosshairs

Musk’s criticism may go beyond ideology. The bill eliminates tax credits for electric vehicles—a direct blow to Tesla. Trump didn’t hold back either.

In his June 2 post, he wrote:
ā€œIt will restore choice for car buyers by REPEALING Biden’s EV mandate and all GREEN NEW SCAM spending.ā€

Space Drama Unfolds

Meanwhile, the FAA reportedly dropped Musk’s Starlink from future air traffic plans.
And Trump pulled Jared Isaacman—Musk’s close ally—from NASA’s leadership shortlist.

ā€œAfter reviewing prior associations, I’m withdrawing Jared Isaacman’s nomination,ā€ Trump posted on May 31. ā€œWe need someone who puts America First in Space.ā€

Musk Goes Nuclear Online

The backlash continued online.
ā€œThis pork-filled spending bill is a disgusting abomination,ā€ Musk wrote on X, June 3. ā€œShame on those who supported it. You know you did wrong.ā€

He didn’t stop there.
ā€œIt will push the deficit to $2.5 trillion and saddle Americans with unsustainable debt. Congress is bankrupting the country.ā€

The White House Responds

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shrugged off the criticism.
ā€œThe president already knows Musk’s opinion,ā€ she said. ā€œIt doesn’t change his.ā€

A Political Pivot?

Musk’s fiery takedown signals more than disagreement—it marks a shift.
He’s no longer playing by Washington’s rules.
With a powerful social media platform at his fingertips, Musk may be gearing up for a new role in American politics.
