Mass Drone Assault Hits Russia as Ukraine Strikes Key Facilities Near Moscow

Hundreds of Ukrainian drones launched a major assault on Russia overnight into Wednesday, with dozens targeting the Moscow region and causing fresh disruptions, including flight delays at the capital’s airports.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted 296 Ukrainian drones across 12 regions — including Moscow — in one of the most intense attacks to date. Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported that at least 42 drones were downed near the capital, with three homes damaged in the town of Chekhov, about 40 miles south of Moscow.

Sheremetyevo International Airport, one of Moscow’s primary aviation hubs, issued warnings of delays and disruptions due to temporary flight restrictions imposed during the strikes. Drone-related disturbances have increasingly affected air traffic in recent weeks.

On the Ukrainian side, Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Counter-Disinformation Center, described the latest strikes as producing “some pretty good hits,” hinting at successful operations against high-value Russian targets.

Among the reported targets:

  • The Dubna Machine-Building Plant, north of Moscow, known for producing aviation, missile, and drone technology.
  • The Technopark ELMA-Zelenograd facility, a key hub for Russian microelectronics and technology meant to replace Western imports.

Kovalenko said these sites are integral to Russia’s defense manufacturing and import substitution efforts. ABC News could not independently verify these claims.

Meanwhile, Russia launched its own overnight attacks on Ukraine, firing six missiles and 88 strike drones, Ukraine’s air force reported. Of those, 71 drones were neutralized. Impacts were recorded in eight different Ukrainian locations.

The uptick in mutual strikes comes amid increasing tensions and unmet diplomatic promises. Since President Donald Trump’s return to office in January, he has vowed to end the war in 24 hours — a pledge that remains unfulfilled. Growing frustration is evident in Trump’s recent statements. On Tuesday, he warned that Putin is “playing with fire”, following earlier remarks calling the Russian leader “absolutely crazy.”

Diplomatic efforts remain in limbo. A Russian peace memorandum, promised by Putin during a call with Trump earlier this month, has yet to materialize. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the document is still under development.

Ukrainian officials, however, are skeptical.

“They’ve already spent over a week on this,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted online. “They talk about diplomacy, but continue launching deadly attacks.”

Andriy Yermak, head of Zelenskyy’s presidential office, echoed the sentiment on Telegram:

“Russians are masters of empty words.”
