Robert F. Kennedy Jr., speaking as part of the US Health and Human Services announcement on Tuesday, stated that the COVID-19 vaccine will no longer be included among the recommended vaccines for healthy children and pregnant women in the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) immunization schedule.
As of Tuesday morning, the CDC’s online immunization schedule had not yet reflected this change.
Kennedy made the announcement in a video posted on the social media platform X, accompanied by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary and National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya.
“As of today, the COVID vaccine for healthy children and healthy pregnant women has been removed from the CDC recommended immunization schedule,” Kennedy said. “Last year, the Biden administration encouraged healthy children to receive yet another COVID shot, despite no clinical data supporting repeated boosters in children.”
It’s important to note that pregnant women and children with underlying health conditions remain at higher risk for severe COVID-19 illness.
This recommendation change comes amid broader updates to COVID-19 vaccine policies. Last week, the FDA announced a revision to its vaccine approval process, which may result in future COVID-19 shots being primarily limited to older adults and individuals at higher risk of severe infection.
