A 37-year-old cryptocurrency investor appeared in court on Saturday following his arrest for allegedly kidnapping and torturing an Italian tourist inside a Manhattan residence, according to multiple media outlets.

John Woeltz was arraigned in New York Criminal Court at 9:00 a.m. EST (2:00 p.m. BST) on charges including kidnapping for ransom, assault, unlawful imprisonment, and several other offenses, court records indicate.

A second suspect, 24-year-old Beatrice Folchi, was also arrested on Saturday in connection with the case, as reported by CBS News, a partner of the BBC in the United States.

Authorities say the arrests came after the victim managed to escape a SoHo residence where he had allegedly been bound and tortured for weeks. The 28-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, was hospitalized and is currently in stable condition. Inside the upscale townhouse, police reportedly discovered firearms and multiple Polaroid photos showing the victim tied up and subjected to abuse.

The victim told police he arrived in New York from Italy on May 6. Upon reaching the suspect’s residence, Woeltz allegedly confiscated his passport and held him captive until he managed to flee on Friday morning.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by ABC News, the victim stated that Woeltz and another individual assaulted him and at one point dangled him from a ledge when he refused to share the password to his bitcoin account.

Woeltz, originally from Kentucky, is reported to be a cryptocurrency investor who had been renting the SoHo property for between $30,000 and $40,000 per month, according to CBS News.
