On Friday, Julia Roberts shared a sad Instagram post announcing the tragic death of her family dog, Myrtle.

The 57-year-old Pretty Woman actress, who frequently goes out with the rescue dog she acquired in 2006, posted a picture of Myrtle that was taken outside.

The message read, ‘Our Myrtle. A Legend. 2006-2025,’ and included a crown emoji, which she shared with her 12.8 million followers.

She married Daniel Moder in 2002, and he also posted a heartfelt remembrance to their cherished pet.

He included a picture of Myrtle and typed out, “The definition of Fierce Loyalty, even if she bit the pizza man once. RIP Mytlle…aka Myrtle Von Mertzenberger.”

The cherished dog was also accustomed to being photographed, and she most famously appeared with Roberts for her Chopard Loves Cinema campaign in 2023.

As a global spokesperson for the high-end jewellery brand, Julia participated in a 12-episode web series for the campaign that provided a more intimate look into her Hollywood life.

James Grey directed the short films, and in one clip, Myrtle was seen leaping up beside the actress while they were filming.

The BTS moments were described as the star “spreading her joy and larks” in a press statement at the time.

“She knits, finds something nice to say about everyone, slips into trainers under her glamorous dresses, takes over the camera herself and interrupts her script rehearsal to cuddle her dog Myrtle that jumps on her lap.”

Both Julia’s and Daniel’s posts received a flurry of condolences from social media users in the comment section.

One penned, “Oh no. So sorry for your loss! She was a star in Chopard Loves Cinema! I’m sure she had the best life with your family. Rest easy Myrtle!” 

Another wrote, “Myrtle, may you take the wonder and acclaim you lived with to the rainbow bridge. You are indelibly etched in hearts forever.”

“Heartbroken. I love you all,” a comment read, while British editor Edward Enninful added, “So so sorry for your loss!!!”

Roberts previously participated in a fundraiser in late December of last year to demonstrate her love for animals.

She collaborated with Be Love Apparel to raise awareness of Frankie Lola and Friends, a dog rescue group.

She immediately posted a cute selfie with one of her other gorgeous pets on her Instagram page at the moment.

Days after Julia celebrated Mother’s Day over the weekend and made an appearance in a rare photo with her three kids, the heartbreaking update was released.

The Notting Hill actress and her husband Daniel have a 17-year-old son named Henry and twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, both of whom are 20.

He shared a special photo of Roberts outside in the lovely sunshine, posing with their children.

Moder captioned the photo by typing out: “Mothers make the coolest stuff. Love these guys” 

In 2023, Julia talked candidly about her kids’ growing up in an interview with Today.

I raise them in the same manner outside the house as I did within, asking them things like, “Are you getting enough sleep?”

And “You sound like you’re sick.” And then “Are you drinking tea?” And then “Text me when you get home you get home (so) I can see that you’re home safe and sound.”

The star added, “And I have an immense amount of appreciation for both of my older kids because they still allow me to be the same mom to them and it’s not eye-rolling and there’s a huge amount of understanding.” 

Additionally, Roberts previously discussed her children with Extra, claiming that her daughter Hazel steals clothes from her wardrobe.

The two, however, have different jewellery tastes, with one explaining, “She’s more bohemian in her aesthetic.”

In an interview with British Vogue last year, Julia also made infrequent remarks against her spouse Daniel.

When discussing how she keeps her “lustrous youth,” the actress specifically mentioned Moder.

“Good genes, leading a life that is fulfilling, and I have said this – and I say it usually as kind of a joke – but I do believe in the love of a good man.”

“I believe that my husband loves me and cares for me in a way that makes me feel deeply, deeply happy,” Roberts added.
