At 100 years old, Thomas and Evelyn Carter are living proof that love can last a lifetime — and then some.
The couple, who met at a community dance in 1955, have been together for 70 years.
Their secret to a long life and lasting relationship? “Patience, purpose, and plenty of laughter,” Thomas says.
They start each day with a shared breakfast and a prayer of gratitude.
Evelyn still makes oatmeal from scratch — “no shortcuts,” she insists.
They take daily walks, even if it’s just around the garden.
The Carters believe in moderation over restriction when it comes to food.
“Nothing fancy, just balanced meals and no late-night snacks,” says Thomas.
They’ve never owned a car, choosing to walk or bike whenever possible.
“We kept moving — bodies weren’t made to sit all day,” Evelyn says.
Their love story was built on communication and quiet understanding.
“We didn’t always agree, but we always listened,” Thomas adds.
Evelyn says weekly date nights never stopped, even in hard times.
They both stayed socially active, volunteering and mentoring local youth.
Puzzles, books, and storytelling have kept their minds engaged.
“No stress was worth holding onto,” says Evelyn. “We let things go.”
They avoid drama, both on TV and in life.
The couple laughs daily — “even at our own forgetfulness,” Thomas jokes.
They find joy in simple things: birdsong, a good cup of tea, holding hands.
Neither smoked, and they only drank wine on special occasions.
Their home is full of plants, sunlight, and music from the 1940s.
Evelyn keeps a journal; Thomas writes letters to their grandchildren.
