Why does Willie Nelson have two birthdays? Country music icon celebrates 92nd birthday

Tuesday is Willie Nelson’s birthday — one of them, at least.

If you ask him, Nelson may tell you that he’s 92 years old as of Tuesday, but his birth certificate tells a different story.

The country music icon explained why he has two birthdays on a 2018 SiriusXM radio show.

“I was born before midnight on the 29th, but it didn’t get registered in the county courthouse until the next day, the 30th,” Nelson said. “So, it went out officially as the 30th. So I just do both days.”

Nelson’s daughter Lana, one of his eight children, told Texas Monthly he celebrated his birthday on April 29 until the age of 18. After joining the Air Force and getting a copy of his birth certificate, he moved celebrations to the 30th.

It was his cousin Mildred who reassured Nelson he had been born on the 29th. Mildred, who was 13 at the time of his birth, also named him. Nelson’s middle name, Hugh, was a nod to Mildred’s brother who had recently died.

Nelson was born and raised in Abbott, Texas. His mother left shortly after he was born and his father remarried and moved away, so he and his older sister, Bobbie, were raised by their grandparents. Bobbie died in 2022 in Austin at the age of 91.

A 500-acre ranch in Spicewood just outside Austin is what Nelson and his wife, Annie D’Angelo, call home.
